The large banana shaped stands look elegant.  They are sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.  Wood is the much preferred look over steel or aluminum.  Landscaping needs to be natural and that means blending in with the environment.  The main downside to wood stands is that they are heavy.  Therefore, only choose steel or aluminum if easy portability is a must.

You can make your own wood stand out of 2*4 or 2*6 lumber.  However, the look is not nearly as elegant as the banana shaped stand.
